Description: This course explores imperial China from the earliest times to 1911. It focuses on causes and consequences of dynastic changes: socioeconomic systems, the development of such major schools of thought and belief as Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism, the formation of a bureaucratic imperial state, territorial expansion, and foreign relations.
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or permission of department chair.
