Description: This course explores modern Japan from the mid-19th century to the present. It focuses on the establishment of the modern Japanese state, the rise of nationalism and imperialism, World War II, the U.S. occupation, postwar democracy, socioeconomic changes, foreign relations, and recent issues.
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or permission of department chair.
