ARTH 358 - Art and Architecture of the Islamic World (3).
Description: This course provides a chronological overview of the art and architecture of the Islamic worlds. Students are introduced to the visual cultures of the major ruling dynasties in the Middle East, North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, and Central Asia. The course culminates in a comparative survey of the art and architecture of the three early modern “gunpowder” states: the Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals. Critical contemporary issues, such as warfare and the destruction of cultural heritage, are also highlighted. Notes: Offered periodically.
